The Big Sick

The Big Sick is Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon’s heart-wrenching, real-life love story. Kumail, a Pakistani stand-up comedian, meets Emily, a graduate student, after one of his stand-up shows in Los Angeles. The two quickly hit it off and begin dating. Kumail’s conservative parents and strict Muslim upbringing lead him to hide his relationship from his family, unbeknownst to Emily. Their relationship abruptly ends when Emily discovers Kumail’s mother has been trying to set him up with countless Pakistani women and is totally unaware of their relationship. Shortly after the break-up, Emily is diagnosed is rushed to the hospital and placed in a medically induced coma. Kumail, alongside Emily’s parents Beth and Terry, anxiously await her recovery all while discovering a few things about themselves and their relationships.

Kumail Nanjiani, co-writer of the film, plays himself in The Big Sick opposite actress Zoe Kazan as Emily Gordon. The real Emily Gordon co-wrote the film with Kumail, and served as an executive producer. Emily’s parents Beth and Terry are played by Oscar winner Laura Linney and the incomparable Ray Romano. Kumail’s parents Azmat and Sharmeen are played by famous Bollywood actor Anupam Kher and actress Zenobia Shroff. Kumail’s friends and fellow stand-up comedians are played by SNL cast member Aidy Bryant and musical comedian Bo Burnham. Director Michael Showalter, whose most recent directorial credit was the hilariously endearing Hello My Name is Doris starring Sally Field, brings this awkward and tender love story to life. The Big Sick producer Judd Apatow, best known for writing and directing Knocked Up, heard Kumail and Emily’s story and immediately said “This should be a movie.”
